ABOUT GPALA

The Group Psychotherapy Association of Los Angeles (GPALA) seeks to advance training, research, education, consultation in group psychotherapy. We believe strongly in the efficacy and viability of group therapy as a primary modality of psychological treatment and emotional support. GPALA was founded in January 2010 through the merging of two long-standing group associations: the Group Psychotherapy Association of Southern California (founded in 1952) and the Los Angeles Group Psychotherapy Society (founded in 1955). GPALA’s strong heritage brings many of the time tested traditions and knowledge from the founding associations and adds its own contemporary goals.  GPALA is enhanced by being an affiliate of the American Group Psychotherapy Association. GPALA is committed to serving our membership and the community of mental health professionals by providing:

  • An inter-disciplinary forum for professionals involved in the use of group psychotherapy for the enhancement of mental health.
  • Educational programs on a regular basis for our membership and other group mental health practitioners
  • Opportunities for professional development
  • Training and additional learning opportunities in group psychotherapy for newly credentialed professionals and students
  • A professional community for group therapists that will assist members in forming professional and social alliances

Scholarship Fund

The GPALA Scholarship Fund helps make group training available to those who may not always be able to afford the full tuition for our training activities. Scholarships are granted to both members and non-members of GPALA, with priority given to current members or those who wish to join GPALA at the same time as applying for scholarship funds. Donations are solicited throughout the year from GPALA members as well as from all those who wish to help replenish the Fund and contribute to this effort.  Anyone can make a donation at anytime on the GPALA website, during one of our fundraising campaigns, or when making payments for other GPALA activities, such as when renewing yearly membership or registering for a training event. Click here for more information.
